Normal Sleep & Insomnia – Session 1 of A Two-Part Wellness Series
Explore the features of healthy sleep, including sleep cycles, stages, and how sleep disorders are classified. Learn about insomnia—its causes, diagnosis, and treatment options, from cognitive behavioral therapy to medications.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Akshay Mahadevia – Esplanade resident, semi-retired Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Specialist.
Dr. Mahadevia completed his Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University in Chicago and his Pulmonary/Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Illinois, Chicago. During his fellowship, he published groundbreaking research on Expiratory Positive Pressure Therapy in Sleep Apnea—work that contributed to the development of CPAP/BiPAP therapy now used worldwide.
He spent 40 years in private practice in Iowa, serving as Medical Director of sleep centers and teaching residents. Today, he continues his passion for advancing care through a clinical research project aimed at improving accuracy in assessing sleep apnea severity.
